Ethical Elegance: Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds for Responsible Luxury

Our Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as man-made or created diamonds, offer an alternative to traditional mined diamonds. They are produced in a laboratory setting, thereby avoiding the negative impacts of diamond mining on both humans and the environment. MARLII LAB uses diamonds that have been sustainably grown in a zero-emissions laboratory located in Belgium.

These diamonds are indistinguishable from mined diamonds, possessing the same optical, physical, and chemical properties. They are formed in a similar process, with carbon atoms placed under high temperature and immense pressure to create a crystalline lattice structure. Once fully formed, the diamonds are cut and polished to reveal their maximum brilliance. Lab-grown diamonds come in a variety of color and clarity grades and are unique, much like mined diamonds.

LAB-GROWN vs MINED

Lab-Grown Diamonds VS Mined Diamonds
Lab-Grown Diamonds Mined Diamonds
Production/Formation Time 6-10 Weeks. 1 million+ years.
Chemical Properties Identical to a minded diamond. A mineral composed of carbon. A mineral composed of carbon.
Price 20-30% reduced price when compared
to mined diamonds.
Can be quite costly.
Origin Completely conflict-free as they’re made in laboratory environment. Advanced technology is used in a highly controlled, zero-emission laboratory environment that mimics the conditions under which diamonds naturally develop. Mines.
Environmental Effect Lab-grown diamonds don’t harm
the environment at all as they’re
man-made.
Detrimental side effects such as soil erosion, deforestation, and ecosystem destruction. The mining process uses diesel fuels, electricity and hydrocarbons which all release harmful carbons into the air. These chemicals cause smog, climate change, and other environmental hazards yet to be discovered.

As of 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) considers both lab-grown and mined diamonds to be real.

The Process

Diamonds, whether lab-grown or mined, start their journey in a similar manner. Carbon atoms are subjected to high temperature and immense pressure, bonding together to form a sparkling crystalline lattice structure. The rough diamond is then carefully cut and polished to bring out its radiant brilliance. Each diamond has its own unique markings, called inclusions, that are formed naturally during its growth process. These distinctive characteristics make each diamond one-of-a-kind.

MARLII LAB’s lab-grown diamonds are produced using a more sustainable process, the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Unlike the traditional high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) method, CVD uses vacuum chambers and less energy to convert carbon-heavy gasses into plasma. This process results in a cleaner, square-shaped rough diamond as the carbon atoms build on top of the diamond seed in a single vertical direction. The CVD method is also more economical, making MARLII LAB’s lab-grown diamonds an excellent choice for those who value sustainability and affordability.

Lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds are virtually indistinguishable to the untrained eye. Even seasoned gemologists often struggle to differentiate between the two, as they are alike in both appearance and chemical composition. Any slight variations are not indicative of quality and are often only noticeable through advanced analysis performed by specially trained gemmologists.
